Casey Vandor [ line apprentice ] is holding a hose that shot hot water from truck. The hot water and low pressure 'melted the frozen gravel and a vacuum truck would then pick up the loose gravel and dirt. This type of excavating was performed around pipes and cable to avoid damage. This method worked out good. Trench is 1 foot wide by 11 feet deep.
Ryan Henkle [ line apprentice ] is installing the pulling sock onto the end of the 69 KV power cable. It'll then be pulled to the other end of a 1800 foot trench by a 1" sock line. There, it'll be attached to the deadend structure and terminated.
Shown above is a 70' dead-end structure. The top is where the overhead wire is dead-ended. The underground cable is terminated part way up the pole. A set of switches are installed. Then the connection is made.
The sock line trailer is shown lower right waiting to start pulling in the overhead wire.
Four runs of 69 underground cable were pulled in and terminated with one cable becoming a spare.
